SOUTH KINGSTOWN, RI -- Scientific, environmental, and technology consulting services firm, Applied Science Associates (ASA), is celebrating 30 years of growth serving clients globally in government, industry, and academia. Thirty years ago, a University of Rhode Island ocean engineering professor and his graduate students saw a need to provide solutions to a variety of coastal and ocean-related problems. They started a company, Applied Science Associates (ASA), to bring together the latest in ocean science and new computer technology. Three decades later, ASA has celebrated a milestone anniversary with an open house event for clients, partners, industry affiliates, and public officials.
ASA’s open house event celebrating thirty years of continued growth was held on June 5 at their recently relocated and newly constructed headquarters at 55 Village Square Drive, South Kingstown, Rhode Island. Awards were presented by state officials including Senator Jack Reed, Governor Donald Carcieri, and Lieutenant Governor, Elizabeth Roberts.
During the past thirty years, ASA has become a world leader in the integration of computer modeling, geographic information systems (GIS), and software development. ASA has grown to over 100 employees in 5 regional offices around the globe. ASA solutions are used by hundreds of companies in a wide variety of sectors and service work has been performed in over 5000 sites in countries around the world.
ASA has worked on numerous high profile projects including the development of a oil spill response tool following the Exxon Valdez oil spill, world class search and rescue software that is used globally, the development of computer models for natural resource damage assessment (NRDA) that are part of U.S. law, operational oceanographic tools for the U.S. Navy, sea level rise and coastal inundation analysis for major coastal cities, renewable energy siting, technology to support China’s growing maritime industry, and the latest GIS technologies to support the massive coastal developments in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
Surging interest in the mix of services and software solutions that ASA offers is evidenced by a global trend in smarter approaches and advanced software tools in support of expanding energy needs, coastal engineering and development projects, ocean use planning, and environmental modeling. The firm originated from a rich history of marine response and crisis management solutions. The company’s founding in 1979 was focused on the core service of advanced numerical 3-dimensional hydrodynamic modeling to solve marine environmental problems. ASA quickly became internationally recognized as a world leader in marine environmental modeling, with a primary focus in the areas of hydrodynamics, pollutant transport and fate, oil spill transport and fate, search and rescue, and the development of integrated modeling and monitoring systems. Today, ASA is recognized as the industry leader in oil, chemical and pollutant transport modeling with integrated ecosystems modeling.
Other growth sectors for the company lie in the promising renewable energy, marine spatial planning, and real-time environmental data management markets, where ASA is well positioned and offers innovative products and services that competing firms lack.
“ASA also recognizes an increasing demand for regulatory and permitting assistance for coastal environmental engineering projects, and this points to a high demand for ASA services in the years to come. ASA is perfectly positioned to meet that demand,” said Craig Swanson, senior principal and co-founder. “ASA applications deliver robust yet usable toolsets—particularly when combined with predictive analytics and data integration.”
“While our company has grown, our culture of focusing on quality science and technology remains the same. We have incredible staff from diverse backgrounds and are lucky to be able to work on projects with global impact.” said Eoin Howlett, CEO of Applied Science Associates.
