BathyFusion Toolbox™

The BathyFusion Toolbox is an ASA in-house modeling tool as well as a commercially available ArcGIS® extension that enables fusion of disparate topographic or bathymetric data sources into a unified high-resolution data set.
Background
An important building block of environmental modeling and analysis is high quality bathymetric or topographic data. To assist the U.S. Navy to generate the best possible data sets for use in wave and surf modeling, ASA developed bathymetry fusion software designed to merge disparate data sources into a unified high-resolution dataset. The individual data sources can range in quality and resolution from coarse global collections, to high-resolution, highly accurate data such as LIDAR or field surveys. The software, applied for the first time in an operational setting, provides the Navy with automated and interactive data fusion tools that utilize the spatial filtering and raster analysis capabilities of ArcMap® and adds cutting-edge data blending algorithms developed by the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL).

The BathyFusion Toolbox can:
- Merge disparate bathymetry datasets to produce a single bathymetry surface in a given area – currently produced using NRL’s MergeBathy algorithms
- Remove bias from input datasets during the merge process
- Track metadata of input datasets and provide high quality output metadata
- Create variable bathymetry surfaces for implementation of ensemble modeling
- Merge topographic datasets for flood modeling and coastal risk analysis application
Variable Bathymetry Creation
- Digitizing tool for inputting feature centerline from photo
- Calculates amplitude and wavelength using ambient depth, uses these parameters to apply a shape to the feature
- Will simulate permutations in centerline and recalculate shape for ensemble modeling
- Will incorporate features back into ambient depth dataset
Outputs from the data fusion process can be automatically exported to a variety of hydrodynamic and wave model input data formats including the Navy Standard Surf Module, SWAN wave model, ASA’s HYDROMAP and WQMAP, and FEMA’s Runup model.
This software is used in-house by ASA and is also available for commercial distribution.
